SOCIAL STATUS OF “THE KNOWING ONES” IN THE TRADITIONAL RUSSIAN SOCIETY
(BY MATERIALS OF VOLGA REGION IN XIX – EARLY XX CENTURIES)

Abstract

Background. In recent years, the study of problems of formation and display of a status and associated means of consolidation of power has become quite topical in historical, sociological and ethnological researches. At the same time, the study of a status in a traditional socium has significant gaps. To a cartain degree such gaps may be filled with researching a status of the Russian “knowing ones” (ritual  experts). The research subject is the status of the “knowing ones” in the traditional socium of Volga region. The aim of the research is to study popular ideas about the status of the “knowing ones” in the sociocultural aspect.
Materials and methods. The research tasks were implemented through using the materials from V. N. Tenishev’s “Ethnographic bureau”, written in the late XIX – early XX centuries, and other published sources. The main research method used was the sociopragmatic one, which made is possible to interpret the status of ritual experts in the traditional society of bonds with mythological and ritual conceptions and social relations.
Results. The author examined popular ideas about the satus of ritual experts in the traditional rural society of Volga region and compared them with common Rus-sian ones. The researcher considered the status of various “knowing ones” – sorce-rers and healers, and revealed a connection between views of the status of sorcerers and views of the power.
Conclusions. The study of popular views of the status of the “knowing ones” in the traditional socium has allowed to determine it as quite a high one. The research carried out confirms conclusions of researchers the said ritual experts were succes-sors of pagan priests from earlier ages, who performed various important functions for the archaic socium.
